Big Basin Hike

Join us for a hike at Big Basin!

Hike path: skyline-to-the-sea => meteor => middle ridge => dool => back to skyline-to-the-sea. Counter clockwise. 

~4.8 miles. ~800-900 ft elevation gain. ~3 hours with a lunch break.

Parking: Attendees are responsible for making your own parking reservation on the Big Basin website. “Reservations for parking are not required, but are encouraged due to the limited amount of first-come, first-served parking available.”

Carpools can be coordinated at this Caroster link but not guaranteed.

Meet: between (a) the big tree with the burned out center and (b) the bathrooms next to the visitor center

* please plan to be at the meeting location by 10am. We will wait until 10:15am and then set off counter-clockwise on the trail. *

Bring: map, water, warm clothes, flashlight

Lunch: Pack your own lunch. Lunch break at Ocean View Summit.

No or limited cell reception in/near Big Basin. Assume no cell service.

Beforehand, download directions and/or save an offline map in the Google Maps app.

Recommendations:

Do not leave any valuables in your car.

Do not leave anything visible in your car.

Leave a note on your car dash stating: “[your name], 6/29 entry, 6/29 planned exit, planned route: skyline-to-the-sea => meteor => middle ridge => dool => back to skyline-to-the-sea. Counter clockwise, [your cell phone number], [number of people in your car]”

Dogs: Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed on this hike’s trail.

Please check with staff at the park entrance kiosk to see if your planned route is safe and passable. 

All trails close at sunset. You need to plan ahead to complete your hike before sunset. 

ALWAYS carry a map and water. Bring warm clothes and a flashlight in case you get caught out after dark.

Expect to find down trees. You will need to climb over, around, or under them. If you cannot get safely past down trees, you will need to turn back. You are responsible for gauging what you can safely cross. When in doubt, TURN BACK! 

Trail conditions are always changing, so please be aware that you may come across blocked trails that we do not know about. If you cannot safely cross a blocked or damaged section of trail, you will need to turn around. When in doubt, TURN BACK!
